Yes and No's of Powerpoint+ Favorites

My three favorite presentations were:
Gabriela Zapata-her slide backgrounds were very pretty, even though they were supposed to be bad examples. Also, I liked the flow of the presentation and thought it was well thought out.
Christian Smith- I thought his presentation was very entertaining and his PowerPoint utilized alot of different texts and backgrounds.
Belen Vinueza- Her slides were comical, especially the animation slide, which probably took a long time to make...props! She also presented well.

Things to do in a PowerPoint:
1.) Keep things short and sweet- don't write everything down on the slide.
2.) Use a constant scheme instead of a different background on every slide.
3.) Make sure fonts are readable and large enough to see clearly.

Things not to do in a PowerPoint:
1.) Try not to have more that 3 to 4 bullet points per slide, otherwise they lose their effectiveness.
2.) Don't overuse animations.
3.) Don't simply read from the PowerPoint, address the audience.

Time's Person of the Year & Web 2.0 Article

After reading the "Time's Person of the Year: You" article, I was quite surprised. I didn't expect Times Magazine to recognize Web 2.0 as something to be proud of,rather something to be ashamed about. It always seemed to me that Times was a magazine full of stuffy political banter and everything a 40 year old man would be interested in. I guess Web 2.0 really is a revolution.

While Thomas Carlyle may have been right at one time or another that the few and the powerful shape the collective destiny, he is no longer correct. Availability to post one's feelings on the web and have people actually watch and care about them has skyrocketed in the past few years. Youtube.com brought together an entire network of not so necessarily computer savvy individuals together. I think people just wanted a dose of reality. I think we all secretly craved watching a pet mouse do an inconsequential trick, or watch a guy light his farts on fire. Whatever it may be that we each use Youtube.com for, it gives us the freedom to broadcast our lives and thoughts. People like to be recognized for something every once in awhile, so it may as well be that awesomely gross skating accident you caught on tape of your buddy last week.

Last week we were all told to find an article relating to Web 2.0. My article,"What to do About Web 2.0" by Andrew Keen and Michael Laskoff talks about Web 2.0 and how Keen and Laskoff are both skeptical about its potential to explode. "Yes, we acknowledge, something called Web 2.0 has arrived, but its potential is so overblown, its hype so out-of-control, marketing managers would do well to take a collective deep breath while determining its real significance and value." The authors recognize that Google did purchase Youtube.com, but chastise this action as supporting pirating videos on the web.

They then proceed to discuss how the consumer is starting to rapidly gain power. For example, they give some advice to manufacturers in order to keep their consumers happy. They say that a forum should be available for discussion and that in this way, your critics have a way to vent, but you can still keep the discussion under control. "...brand managers simply must learn to maintain a balanced perspective."

Also, they tell brand managers to listen to these complaints as they can be legitimate problems with your creation. As a final statement, they warn to never put all your eggs in the same basket because in today's world it is a definite gamble.

I believe that Youtube.com is just the beginning and right now is the most prevalent piece of Web 2.0. Youtube.com put this new revolution of individual empowerment on the map and now everyone is reacting to it in many different outlets, whether they are blogs, video posting, etc. I do not agree with the authors in the article that I read. I think they believe that eventually people will grow to the moral superiority they seem to think they posses and will reject Web 2.0 as a fanatical idea. The honest truth is that the majority of people like the ordinary because they can relate. Television, magazines, and advertisements these days are ridiculous manipulations of the truth. My opinion? This is only the beginning.

Microsoft Word

So far, I have only used Microsoft Word for the basic papers and my resume for college. I would like to know how to do more complicated layouts with my papers, and maybe learn how to do a more professional layout for job applications in the future.

My Introduction

Hi everyone, my name is Alexandra Christina Dodson, but I prefer to go by Alex. I am from sunny San Diego, California, aka the best place to live! I really like black and white photography, and I also love to cook for my family back home. In my spare time, I enjoy riding my three horses, and I also like to squeeze in some reading here and there too.

Something you can remember me by is the dimples I have in both my shoulders. I have been using computers from a young age, but I am by no means accomplished. I can do the basic Word, Powerpoint, and Internet, but I cannot do complicated things. One of my major concerns is making sure I have the right equipment installed on my Mac. I don't have Outlook on my computer yet, and I'm not exactly sure where to get it.

Hope this helps!
